Shukri Abu Baker is a Palestinian political prisoner in the United States. He was the CEO of the Holy Land Foundation, the largest Muslim charity in the U.S. until 2001. As a result of post-9/11 repression, Shukri and four of his colleagues—now known as The Holy Land Five—were unjustly arrested and convicted of “material support for terrorism.” He and Ghassan Elashi remain in federal prison to this day.

Despite his incarceration, Shukri has continued to write, draw, and craft prayer beads from bread. We are excited to welcome his daughter, Nida Abu Baker, who will speak on the case of The Holy Land Five and introduce this new book. Nida is a tireless advocate for her father, the Holy Land Five, and for a liberated Palestine.

As Nida states about the case:

“They specifically put people like this in prison. They put the most intellectual people in prison so that you can be afraid and stay silent because they don’t want you to be just like them. But your silence is complicity in a genocide. Your silence is complicity in charging people with a crime they did not commit. We should be speaking up for political prisoners. We should be speaking up for Palestine because standing with Palestine and Palestinians is standing with or for humanity.”
