Before the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups, which Amnesty found to have "constituted war crimes and crimes against humanity," Israel was engaged in a decades-long, unlawful occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Since then, defying the International Court of Justice, Israel has embarked on an indiscriminate war on Gaza, intensified its system of apartheid, increased annexation and settler violence against all Palestinians, and has severely curtailed humanitarian aid by international organizations to Palestine. To date, the war has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and has injured more than 173,500 others. These acts have been documented by Amnesty International, and the Israeli human rights organization B'TSELEM, both of which have determined that the war on Gaza meets the definition of genocide, and the United Nations, among others.
