Learn about Marxist-Humanism by participating in a study group on the philosophy the right wing despises and totally mischaracterizes. This week’s chapter one, which we will read out loud, takes up the “dialectic” of the philosopher G.W.F. Hegel, whom Karl Marx studied in college and throughout his life. Dialectic was Hegel’s term for the “ceaseless movement of Ideas and of History” which he witnessed during his lifetime. Hegel saw human beings actively shaping world history in a period when it was generally assumed that history was random or only controlled by religious deities. After observing the French Revolution, he developed his works about the dialectical process that later inspired revolutionaries such as Marx.
