Storytime:

As many of you know, Mary L. Johnson (who is now 93) is one of the most amazing freedom fighters and people to have graced Chicago and the movement to get freedom and justice for Chicago police torture survivors and countless others who have been imprisoned.

And you might know that she has become a best friend of mine over the years after first meeting her while going to school at an event at DePaul way back in 2007.

One thing she said to me when I met her that night when Michael was incarcerated at the Tamms Supermax Prison (which was later closed), was that all prisons should be our focus -- not just the one like Tamms with the most extreme torture. They're all bad.

Unfortunately, her son Michael Johnson (who is now 72) has remained in prison- having served over 40 years of a life sentence. To imagine them not being with each other outside of short visits in unbearable -- especially as Mary L. approaches the end of her life.

Another thing has always stood out to me is that Mary L has always fought for everyone -- not just Michael.

So I am very thankful that we still have a chance to show up for her and Michael this June 15th by showing up to the
