Content: This year, while the United States of America will celebrate its 250th year as a nation, it’s fair to say that most North Americans aren’t aware of the history of our neighbor nations to the south of us. Starting nearly as soon as the Caribbean islands and Latin America were “discovered” by Europeans in 1492, the lands to our south were plundered for riches and the indigenous people exploited and/or exterminated in service to extractive enterprises that filled coffers especially in Spain, Great Britain, and Portugal. Over the last 5 centuries, a variety of different European countries have had more or less influence. One constant has remained true throughout, the peoples of the Caribbean and Latin American have never benefitted from the wealth of the land or fertility of the soil. In order to gain a better understanding of the dynamics driving events today, we need to understand the long history that has shaped the continent.
